A Massachusetts State Police trooper did exactly that, going to the aid of a defenseless baby coyote pup who’d been discovered abandoned all alone along a busy highway.
When trooper Carlo Mastromattei saw that the pup’s mother was unable to be found, he called Lisa Cutting, owner of Ocean View Kennels, for assistance in securely removing the animal from the dangerous situation.
The dog was no longer in immediate danger, but Mastromattei’s generosity didn’t stop there. At that late hour, all neighboring wildlife rehabilitation centers appeared to be closed.
As a result, the trooper decided to go above and beyond his call of duty to keep the tiny coyote safe until dawn. Mastromattei took the pup home, where he and his girlfriend kept him warm and fed all night.
Mastromattei took the coyote to the Tufts Wildlife Clinic the next day for a checkup. Fortunately, he was determined to be in good health, due in large part to the trooper’s quick rescue.
The young coyote has now been placed in the care of a wildlife rehabilitator, according to the Massachusetts State Police. With luck, he’ll keep gaining strength until he’s old enough to be released back into the wild and enjoy his life as nature intended.
Those engaged in the pup’s rescue are receiving well-deserved thanks from police officials, who stated in a post: “The Department expresses heartfelt gratitude to Trooper Mastromattei, his fiancée, Ocean View Kennels, and Tufts for their loving care for this lovely little creature.”
